Drama in the language classroom

Drama is a subject that can be a wonderful addition to language learning and allows fun experiences in the classroom. It is not only an activity based alternative but also supports the different needs and learning styles in the classroom. It can be used as a tool for differentiation for a whole group or for smaller group settings. As a creative process (part) it can inspire both teachers and students. It brings movement into the classroom, which is of great importance for younger students. At the workshop for our language teaching colleagues, we would like not only to give general insight into Drama but also introduce hands-on activities, give ideas, foster motivation and inspire through the broad opportunities of language acquisition. Besides the theoretical input in form of an explanatory presentation we invite participants to personally experience the presented activities and to exchange practical ideas for their application in their classrooms. We will bring some examples of our practice and hope to elicit our participants a little out of their own comfort zones to experience a different way of learning.

Outcomes:
Our workshop session is a process that is meant to explain drama and it’s many varied disciplines as a way to enhance learning and show how routes of creativity can inspire teachers as part of their own learning and create awareness in risk taking for the benefit of the student and teacher.

It will highlight Drama as new and interesting learning tool and will provide the following:
- A general insight (overview) into the many varied drama coaching practices.
- An exploration to the possibilities within Drama for language learning.
- Offer material for differentiation and different learning needs.
- Drama activities as hands-on material for lessons.
- Activities to develop student confidence.
- New ways to strengthen speaking and writing skills.
